Faculty of Modern Languages at Heidelberg University invites applications for a Full professorship (W3) in "English Philology: Literary Studies (from Renaissance to present)" (f/m/d) starting April 1, 2028.

The English Department at Heidelberg University is located in the heart of Heidelberg's Old Town and offers an attractive environment for research and teaching. It is the largest department in the Faculty of Modern Languages in terms of student numbers, with five professorships and numerous research assistants.

Responsibilities

• Conduct research in English literature from the Renaissance to the present, with a particular focus on the eighteenth through twenty-first centuries and at least two period or genre-specific areas of dedicated expertise.
• Demonstrate proven experience in at least two of the following research areas: literary and cultural theory, media and book history, media and film, narratology, postcolonial studies, gender and sexuality, digital humanities.
• Teach the full scope of English literature, covering literary studies from the 18th to the 21st century, including literary history.
• Contribute to the curriculum of the BA, MA, and MEd programs in English Studies.
• Possibly contribute to the interdisciplinary MA in Popular Cultures program and the Certificate of Advanced Studies in Gender & Queer Studies.

Qualifications

• University degree and a qualified doctorate.
• Pedagogical aptitude proven by teaching experience.
• Habilitation, or a successfully evaluated junior professorship, or equivalent qualifications.
• Comprehensive and visible research profile demonstrated through international publications, conference organization, or research projects.
• Proven experience in university teaching and willingness to participate in academic self‑governance.
• Track record in securing external funding.
