Motor Vehicle Operator (Seasonal)

Summary

This position is located in the Seasonal Staffing Office-North Cascades National Park, in the Building and Utilities Division. The selectee will perform recurring building and/or utility and operation duties and assist journeymen and other higher graded maintenance workers. The position is open to the first 150 applicants or until 07/21/2026, whichever comes first. All applications submitted by 11:59 PM (EST) on the closing day will receive consideration. Anticipated entry on duty: October – November.

Major Duties

Major duties include the following responsibilities:

• WG‑07: Operates platform trucks, van trucks, dump trucks, specialty pumping equipment, and trash removal trucks with gross vehicle weight up to 32,000 pounds. Transports passengers, supplies, materials, equipment, and tools; tows various trailers; performs general maintenance on motor vehicles; handles asphalt by shovel or rake; cleans ditch lines and culverts; conducts roadside brushing, garbage collection, striping, and traffic flagging.
• WG‑08: Operates heavy engineering equipment such as gasoline or diesel‑powered heavy equipment, five‑cubic‑yard dump trucks, road graders, front‑end loaders, mowers, sweepers, and sanding units. Operates trucks and equipment on congested roadways, in inclement weather, and on steep or narrow roadways. Loads, secures, and hauls equipment to and from project sites using trucks and trailers.

Physical demands: Frequent lifting of items up to 50 pounds, constant vibration, jerking, and jolting from operating over rough surfaces. Working conditions: Mostly outdoors with exposure to rain, mud, snow, hot/cold temperatures, dust, fumes, oils, solvents, and potential hazards such as poisonous plants and wildlife. The operator must follow prescribed safety practices and use protective hearing devices and hard hats.

Education

There is no substitution of education for experience for Wage Grade (WG) positions.

Requirements

• U.S. citizenship required. Appointment subject to background investigation and favorable adjudication.
• Male applicants must meet Selective Service Registration Act requirements.
• Participation in the Direct Deposit Electronics Funds Transfer Program and a negative drug test prior to appointment; random testing thereafter.
• Valid driver's license required; submit a Motor Vehicle Operator's License and Driving Record. Submit all certified driving records from all states currently or formerly held; at own expense.
• Depending on the park, possess and maintain a current Class A or Class B Commercial Driver's License. Pinnacles National Park requires a Class B CDL with a passenger endorsement.
• Uniform may be required; a uniform allowance will be provided. Willingsness to wear uniform and comply with National Park Service standards is required.
• willingness to work on‑call, evenings, weekends, holidays, overtime, and shift work.
• Minimum age: 18 years; or 16 years with one of the following:
  • graduated from high school or received equivalent certification; or
  • completed a formal vocational training program; or
  • received a statement from school authorities citing preference for employment over continued education; or
  • currently enrolled in secondary school and working only during school vacations or part‑time during the school year under a formal student employment program.
