The research project "The Linguistic (Pre-)History of the Indo-Iranian Frontier", funded by the German Research Foundation (DFG) within the Emmy Noether Program, is concerned with the modern languages of the Indo-Iranian Frontier (present-day Afghanistan and Pakistan). It aims to gain a more comprehensive picture of the region's linguistic history and prehistory through a close integration of field research and empirical‑descriptive work with historical‑comparative studies. The pre‑doctoral position is situated within the sub‑project on the Yidgha‑Munji group and focused on field research and language description.

Job Description

• Doing linguistic fieldwork on Yidgha in Pakistan
• Working with archival materials on Munji
• Contributing to the historical‑comparative work of the project team, e.g. by creating lexical databases
• Within the framework of the third‑party‑funded research project, the opportunity to pursue a doctorate is offered (doctorate on a topic related to the linguistic description of Yidgha)

Requirements

• Master’s degree or equivalent

Desirable

• Previous experience with linguistic fieldwork, particularly in the Hindu Kush region
• Previous experience with linguistic research on the Iranian languages of Pakistan
• Willingness to conduct linguistic fieldwork in Pakistan independently under potentially challenging conditions
• already existing fieldwork contacts in Chitral
• Communicative competence in at least one of the regional contact languages (Pashto, Urdu)
• Competence and experience in intercultural communication
• Ability to work in a team
