W2 Professorship (with W3 tenure track) in Pathomechanisms of hospital-acquired infections and antimicrobial stewardship

Provisionally limited to a period of six years from the earliest possible date, with a permanent W3 professorship offered subsequently upon eligibility.

Responsibilities

• Hold a chair at Medical Clinic V – Clinic for Internal Medicine (Infectious Diseases and Hospital Hygiene) and manage the antimicrobial stewardship program.
• Represent the field comprehensively in research, teaching, and patient care regarding nosocomial infections and antimicrobial stewardship.
• Conduct clinically relevant basic research on nosocomial infections and inflammation using innovative ex vivo organ and animal models, and human cohort samples; conduct mono‑ and multi‑centre clinical trials (desirable).
• Actively participate in existing research networks such as the Cluster of Excellence – Cardiopulmonary Institute (CPI) and the DFG Research Unit FOR 5427 “Bacterial Renal Infection and Defense” (BARICADE). Independently secure external funding and collaborate nationally and internationally.
• Engage in the German Center for Infection Research (DZIF) and the German Center for Lung Research (DZL).
• Participate in early‑career researcher support structures, including the Giessen Graduate Centre for Life Sciences (GGL), the structured doctoral program (JLU TRAINEE), and the clinician scientist program (JLU CAREER).
• Fulfill teaching duties per the Faculty of Medicine’s Teaching Obligation Regulation, delivering interdisciplinary cross‑sectional lectures and practical courses.
• Integrate gender aspects in research and teaching.
• Demonstrate cooperativeness in university–hospital collaborative projects and joint clinical studies within the Research Campus of Central Hessen alliance.

Qualifications

• Successfully completed a university education in medicine and the necessary qualification for scientific work (e.g., a doctorate, habilitation, or subject‑specific peer‑reviewed publications).
• Proof of board certification (specialist qualification) in hygiene and environmental medicine, microbiology, virology, infectious disease epidemiology, or internal medicine and infectious diseases.
• International recognition in infectious disease research and extensive expertise in basic research on infectious diseases.
• Proven success in independent acquisition of external funding.
• Special pedagogical aptitude for representing the specialty in academic teaching.
• A broad clinical expertise in infectious diseases and/or infection prevention; expertise in antimicrobial stewardship is a prerequisite.
• For candidates above 50 years, a civil servant appointment under § 66 Para. 3 s. 2 and 3 Hessian Higher Education Act (HessHG) in conjunction with § 11 Hessian Career Regulation (HLVO) requires a specific functional interest.
