Summary

U.S. Wildland Fire Service (USWFS) This Wildland Fighter (Prevention) position is with the US Wildland Fire Service, GW- working in the following locations: Grants Pass, Oregon; Medford, Oregon.

Major Duties

  • Develop, coordinate, and implement educational school programs, meetings, and events with tribal governments and local communities to reduce loss resulting from wildland fire.
  • Lead the wildfire prevention and mitigation program and facilitate local, state, and regional/national/tribal forums.
  • Develop and implement strategic wildfire mitigations and protection plans during wildfire events to assess actual and potential risks and hazards.
  • Direct the identification and analysis of major causes of wildland fire and ensure that these causes are addressed in wildland fire management plans.
  • Lead and/or participate in internal and external workshops to present key aspects of wildfire prevention and mitigation program.

Education

IMPORTANT - PLEASE NOTE: There is no qualifying education for the 0456 series at this grade level.

Requirements

  • Must be a U.S. Citizen or National.
  • Direct deposit required.
  • Selective Service: Males born after December 31, 1959, must be registered for Selective Service or exempt.
  • Background investigation: subject to satisfactory adjudication of background investigation and/or fingerprint check. Failure to satisfy the background check will result in cancellation of offer of employment or may be grounds for termination.
  • Physical requirements/fitness test: must pass an initial pre‑employment physical examination and must be able to pass the work capacity fitness test (must carry a 45 lb pack for 3 miles within 45 minutes). Failure to meet any required medical qualifications will disqualify you for employment.
  • Drug testing: mandatory pre‑employment drug test. Applicants will not be appointed if a verified positive drug test is received. Positions may require a valid state driver's license or CDL; information will be provided at job offer.

Benefits

Probationary or trial period: The probationary period is an extension of the appointment process. The employment of an individual serving a probationary or trial period automatically terminates when that period ends unless the agency affirmatively certifies in writing that the individual’s employment should continue. Upon completion of the probationary or trial period, employment will be terminated unless the agency certifies in writing that continued employment is warranted.
