Max Planck Society

PostDoc (m/f/d) in Global Terrestrial Biogeochemical Modelling

Stellenbeschreibung:

Overview

The Max Planck Institute for Biogeochemistry (MPI-BGC) in Jena conducts interdisciplinary fundamental research in Earth system sciences, focusing on climate and ecosystems. With around 250 staff, the institute celebrates its 25th anniversary since 2022. Jena offers a high‑tech industry environment, renowned research institutions, a modern university and a green natural setting in the Saale valley. The Department of Biogeochemical Signals seeks a full‑time PostDoctoral Researcher in Global Terrestrial Biogeochemical Modelling (m/f/d) in a 3‑year contract, with possible extension.

Responsibilities

  • Conduct research and develop predictive biosphere modelling using the QUINCY model
  • Design and implement novel model components, analyse simulations, and develop evaluation strategies within BSI’s Terrestrial Biosphere Modelling group
  • Publish research in peer‑reviewed journals and conferences
  • Develop independent research ideas and collaborate with department researchers and the broader German and European land‑surface modelling community through national and European projects

Qualifications

  • PhD in environmental science, environmental engineering, climate or Earth system science, environmental physics, or comparable fields
  • Background in terrestrial biogeochemical cycles, terrestrial ecology, land‑atmosphere interactions and numerical modelling
  • Experience with the development and application of global process‑based ecosystem models and high‑performance computing is highly desired
  • Proficiency in at least one higher programming language (e.g., FORTRAN, C++) and in data processing/visualisation (e.g., Python, R)
  • Ability to work independently and as part of a team
  • Demonstrated record of publishing scientific results
  • Very good written and spoken English

Benefits

The position belongs to the Terrestrial Biosphere Modelling group and offers access to the Max Planck Society’s career training and personal mentoring. The full‑time PostDoctoral Researcher (m/f/d) position will be filled urgently. Part‑time work is generally possible. Compensation follows the collective agreement (TVöD Bund) and includes a pension plan (VBL). The Max Planck Society promotes gender equality and diversity; women are explicitly encouraged to apply, and the society also encourages severely disabled applicants.
