AI Research Engineer - Foundation Models

In this role you will advance foundational intelligence by researching, designing, and training large-scale multimodal models that transform sensor data into autonomous capabilities. You will own the full model lifecycle—from data curation and training to evaluation—contributing to Helsing’s mission to protect democracies with ethical, high-impact AI. You will bridge AI research and engineering, collaborating with experts to push state-of-the-art while upholding responsible practices.

• research and design large-scale foundational models (LLMs/VLMs) for multimodal data
• train and fine-tune Vision-Language Models on custom datasets
• manage full model lifecycle: data curation, training, evaluation
• develop and optimize custom layers, loss functions, and distributed training loops
• contribute to internal research culture and communicate complex concepts clearly
• stay current with cutting-edge papers and implement them in codebase

• MSc in Machine Learning, Computer Science, or Mathematics with focus on Deep Learning
• theoretical understanding and practical experience in training Foundational Models (LLMs, VLMs, multimodal)
• strong software engineering skills in Python and fluency with DL frameworks (PyTorch/JAX)
• ability to implement custom layers, loss functions, and distributed training loops
• clear communicator capable of contributing to internal research culture
• first-principles mindset with ability to translate ArXiv work into code
