Legal & Wording Counsel (m/f/d)*

In this role you provide independent legal guidance across civil law, insurance concepts and consumer protection, supporting both the Great Lakes legal function and Munich Re Specialty – Global Markets. You shape policy wordings, advise on primary insurance programs, and back underwriting with regulatory and contract clarity. You will collaborate in a multi-jurisdictional team, drive wordings governance, and contribute to Europe-wide expansion efforts. The role combines advisory, drafting and training responsibilities in a global, cross-functional setting.

• Provide independent legal advice on civil law, litigation/arbitration, insurance contract law, insurance distribution law and consumer protection
• Design, develop and review specialty policy wordings, ensuring clear and appropriate coverage
• Support underwriters and act as technical reference on regulatory, underwriting and product queries
• Collaborate with Wordings Manager on governance, alignment with underwriting guidelines and new product guidelines
• Negotiate and draft distribution/agency agreements, insurance contracts, NDAs, reinsurance agreements and related documents
• Provide product and underwriting support, including coverage questions and endorsements
• Manage policy wording development and maintain a current centralized repository reflecting regulatory changes
• Provide legal support across the business lifecycle from onboarding to offboarding agents
• Collaborate globally with Munich Re Group experts and cross-functional teams; deliver trainings to Great Lakes staff
• Contribute to business structure and European expansion initiative with multi-jurisdictional team

• Above-average legal qualification (German state exams preferred, or European/UK equivalent)
• Admission as Syndikusanwalt or Rechtsanwalt or equivalent with at least 5 years post-qualification experience
• Experience in primary insurance and distribution law, preferably within an insurer
• Strong understanding of Solvency II, IDD, EIOPA statements (German/European context)
• Proven expertise in wordings, coverage topics and corporate/commercial law
• Excellent German and English communication; intercultural competence
• Strong contract drafting and negotiation skills
• Analytical, pragmatic, solution-oriented thinker; able to manage large projects
