Staff Engineer, Checkout Platform (m/f/d)

As Staff Software Engineer for the Checkout Platform, you will lead the design and build of a greenfield headless checkout in a Java backend, shaping APIs and domain boundaries. You’ll work embedded in the Checkout team to deliver scalable core commerce services and influence architecture beyond the team. You’ll drive technical decisions with a focus on security, reliability, and maintainability, while mentoring engineers and partnering with Product to enable future AI-powered commerce capabilities.

• Build and evolve the Core Commerce Services platform with scalable, channel-agnostic checkout capabilities from design to production
• Define APIs, domain boundaries, and integration patterns prioritizing scalability, reliability, security, observability, and maintainability
• Align technical decisions and integration contracts across Checkout, Payment, and other dependent teams
• Mentor engineers through pairing, design discussions, and code reviews to raise engineering standards
• Collaborate with Product to translate business needs into scalable technical solutions and foundations for AI-powered assistants and agentic commerce
• Shape architecture in a greenfield environment, establishing foundations for future commerce and emerging channels
• Lead by influence to raise the technical level across engineering domains
• Contribute hands-on to production code while guiding architectural decisions

• Strong Java and backend engineering expertise
• Experience designing and building backend services, platforms, and large-scale distributed systems
• Senior technical leadership at Staff/Principal level or equivalent, with high autonomy
• Hands-on in a greenfield / 0-to-1 environment with ability to shape architecture and APIs
• Proven mentoring ability and cross-domain alignment experience
• Experience with headless or traditional checkout, order management, SaaS/platform engineering, e-commerce or marketplaces is a plus
